Michelangelo painted the scenes of the vault, as is well known, proceeding from east to west, that is, in a manner contrary to the development of the stories on Genesis in the central panels. In particular he started painting from the portion above the ceremonial entrance to the altar. Two phases were necessary, due to the scaffolding that covered half of the chapel and that had to be dismantled and reassembled. Half of the works probably had to be at the original height of the marble hurdle, more or less at the center of the chapel, usually indicated at the Creation of Eve in the fifth span.
